The Coach is an experienced person who is paired with a lesser skilled individual in the workplace in order to assist with the professional and personal development of this employee. With the advent of learnerships in the workplaces and according to SAQA legislation, the function of the Coach has become increasingly important to ensure the success of Learnerships, Apprenticeships and Internships.

This programme is aimed at providing appropriate theoretical and practical training interventions to enable individuals to effectively execute the activities related to Coaching learners in the workplace.

The programme is aligned with unit standard 117877. Perform one-to-one training on the job (4 credits on NQF level 3).


The qualifying learner will be capable of the following:
  • Prepare for one-to-one training on the job

  •    Conduct a task analysis and create a standard of     excellence
       Draw up a training and development plan
       Creating an appropriate learning environment
  • Conduct one-on-one coaching or training sessions
  •    Ensure that coaching conforms to the outcomes-     based approach
       Ensure logic and structure during the coaching     session
       Check learner's understanding and progress
  • Monitor and report on learner performance and     progress

  •    Facilitate a 360-degree monitoring and reporting     environment
       Structured measurement against agreed outcomes
       Give constructive feedback
       Make recommendations on learner progress and     readiness for assessment
  • Review and improvement of the coaching session
  •    Review tools and checklists
       Make recommendations for improvement for future     training

    To demonstrate applied competence, candidate coaches will be expected to complete an on-the-job assignment in the form of a portfolio of evidence.

    Candidates must already be competent in terms of the learning area in which they will provide coaching / training.
